Motorcycle helmet scheme launched - 23/11/2007The government is to introduce a legally-binding motorcycle helmet safety rating scheme, Auto Industry reports.
To be known as SHARP (the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme), the new scheme will see all helmets given a "safety rating" of one to five stars, dependent on how effectively they cushion high-speed impacts.
This might have a significant effect on motorcycle safety - and consequently on future accident claims.
The scheme was officially launched yesterday at London's Road Safety Expo 07 by road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
He commented: "Our research indicates that even though all helmets have to reach a minimum legal standard, safety performance can vary by as much as 30 per cent."
According to figures released by the government, SHARP could save the lives of 50 motorcyclists each year by encouraging them to purchase safer helmets.
