Pot holes increase accident claims - 08/04/2008There was a call to ban Lorries on West Sussex roads this week due to concerns about the rise in accident claims.
Local councillors in Chichester voiced their worries about the damaged caused by juggernauts on unclassified roads. Mike Hall, county councillor, said: "Most of these roads have massive HGVs on them, but were not designed to take their weight.
"Many of these are now major roads for rat running. Perhaps we should be looking at the number of accidents happening on unclassified roads, as against classified roads."
A local committee heard that up to a fifth of unclassified roads in the county needed structural attention.
Funds for the unclassified road maintenance may have to be streamed from those allocated to A and B roads. This has raised fears that the classified road system could break down beyond repair.
Cllr Hall requested that more unclassified roads in the county be off-limits to heavy goods vehicles. Statistics support banning because accident claims have risen by 600 per cent due to potholes.
