Accidents happen in all types of places with many resulting in severe personal injury, many people act immediately knowing that they must take certain steps before they were to make accident claims for compensation. This is a rough guide to what steps you should take after an accident which has left you injured.

This is mainly car accidents where a non-fault driver or passenger is injured, mostly with whiplash. Before the compensation case can be processed the claimant must do the following at the scene of the accident:

• Always get the third party's details, e.g. name, address, insurance number etc. This is not only necessary for you personal injury claim but also to claim against the damage to your vehicle.
• Always report the incident to the police and if injured it is a good idea to call them to the scene. The police report is very handy to have when making compensation claims.
• Witness reports, again if police are present they would do this but it's always beneficial to get this yourself in case they attend the scene late. Statements do not have to be taken immediately, names, addresses and contact numbers would be enough for the time being.
• Visit your local doctor or the hospital and make sure that all injuries are recorded as it's always better to be safe.

Work accidents

Many people are now becoming educated in what the laws state when it come to being injured at work, in the past many would not claim compensation from their employers from the fear of being dismissed or just did not know how to make accident claims. At the scene of a work accident make sure that the following is done:

• Make sure that your accident is recorded in the company 'accident book'. Every company must by law have a book which records every accident that has occured within the working environment. If this is not done at the scene of the incident make sure it is recorded in the book straight after.
• Take witness statements from other employers and especially from your supervisors.
• Request that a health and safety inspection is made at the premises.
• Take photographic evidence if possible. This is at times vital on building sites where the environment may change within a few days.
• Always see your local GP or a hospital doctor to get the injuries looked at. Take note of days attended and make repeat visits every time you are in severe pain from the injury.

Slips and trips

This may only result in bumps and bruises to many but some have more severe injuries when they fall, it can lead to broken bones and ligaments which may leave scars etc.

• If the accident occurs in a private place e.g. supermarket then make sure it is recorded in the 'accident book'.
• If it occurs in a public place then take photographs of the scene with a measuring tool. The depth of the defect must be at least 1 inch for the claim to be valid.
• Call the local authority and report the defect and the accident, maker sure that the incident has been recorded by the authority. Always keep records of times, dates and the people you have spoken to.
• Visit your local doctor to have your injuries looked at. Make visits to the doctor when you are in pain from the injury.
