IOSH advises police caution - 06/11/2007Following the heavy fine issued to the Metropolitan Police following the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has issued advice on risk management for emergency services.
The police force were fined £175,000 last week for the 2005 shooting of the innocent Brazilian man, who forces mistook for a terror suspect.
Costs of £385,000 were also ordered by a judge, after the force was found in breach of its public protection duty.
Lisa Fowlie, IOSH president, said: "Our sympathies are with the relatives of Jean Charles De Menezes and all the passengers and workers involved in this harrowing incident.
"Lessons must be learned - in high pressure situations, it’s vital that those making life and death decisions have robust communications, support systems and resources to minimise risk, recognising risk will always be there."
Ms Fowlie added that a "balance" was required for emergency workers - between them not feeling hampered in their essential protective work, but equally for them not to be in dangerous breach of safety laws.
