Met fined for de Menezes shooting - 02/11/2007The Metropolitan Police has been fined £175,000 for the shooting of Jean Charles De Menezes at Stockwell underground station in 2005.
Despite the Old Bailey verdict, which ruled that the force broke health and safety laws in the run-up to the tragic killing, commissioner Sir Ian Blair has indicated that he will not leave his job as a result.
Mr de Menezes was mistaken for a terror suspect in the aftermath of the attempted 21/7 bombings - and shot dead by police on the station platform.
Talking to the BBC, the victim's brother Giovanni da Silva said that he was "pleased" with the outcome of the case.
London mayor Ken Livingstone, however, bemoaned the verdict, saying that it would make it more difficult for forces to pursue terror suspects in future.
"As the law now stands based on this court case, an officer has got to have at the back of their mind...the implications of this judgement in the sort of situation that might occur again," he said.
