Irish state spend millions on compensation claims - 02/04/2008Members of the public are pursuing compensation claims against the sate to such a degree that the Irish government has announced it has earmarked €500 million to pay them off.
The country’s State Claims Agency (SCA) has also announced that is currently handling 4,000 legal actions, with a third dedicated to medical negligence.
Over the past five years alone, 782 clinical negligence cases which have caused a cost of €21 million, or around €26,854 each.
During that same period, 3,485 public liability, employer's liability or property damage cases were settled for €10,473 each, or a total of €36.5 million.
The SCA is responsible for the management of personal injury and property damage claims against the State and of the underlying risks. When performing these functions, SCA is known as the NTMA.
