Lawyer stole client’s £1m compensation - 10/04/2008A lawyer has been jailed for 10 years after being found guilty of stealing £1.2 million of compensation that was meant for a paralysed client.
The stolen money was part of a £1.8million pound compensation settlement for Keith Anderson who was left in a wheelchair after a serious traffic accident. It was intended to fund a lifetime of care for Mr Anderson, 45.
Although his law firm was in debt, Solicitor Thomas McGoldrick, 59, siphoned off the money from his firm’s client accountant to sustain his high standard of living.
Mr McGoldrick spent the money while trying to cover his tracks using “dummy” bills. He tried to appease the Law Society, by insisting that Mr Anderson had given him a gift of £900,000. With the net closing in McGoldrick escaped to America for one last big hurrah.
Mr Anderson, who was present in court when Mr McGoldrick was sentenced to jail, commented: “When the officer told me I had no money in my account my whole world just stopped… I had been brought up to believe a solicitor is someone you could trust”
In passing sentence on Mr McGoldrick the judge said it was “the very worst breach of trust for a professional man”.
