Michelmores: Plastic not so fantastic - 22/11/2007

A cosmetic surgery warning has been made by a leading medical negligence lawyers.

Head of clinical negligence at Michelmores Laurence Vick said that patients unhappy with their looks should be aware of the "inherent" dangers in the operations.

He added: ‘Many of these operations are invasive and involve full-scale surgical procedures carried out under general or local anaesthetic.

"The concern is that clinics and practitioners do not explain the risks and patients do not understand what can go wrong."

Patients can contract infections, suffer complications from anaesthetic, face extreme pain or be operated on by a negligent or inept surgeon.

The issue has been heightened by the high-profile case of rapper Kanye West's mother, Donda - who died following a botched eight-hour combined tummy-tuck breast reduction and liposuction procedure.

It emerged that she had been previously warned of the risks by plastic surgeon Dr Andre Aboolian, Michelmores reports.

The doctor who carried out the operation, Dr Jan Adams, is currently being investigated by US police for possible medical negligence.
