Medical claims in Northern Ireland declared too high - 30/03/2008

Nearly £76 million pounds worth of compensation has been paid out to victims of medical negligence over the last five years in Northern Ireland.

This was brought to our attention by DUP MLA Alex Easton who noticed that the £13.6 million paid out during the last financial year was much lower than previous years, for example the £20.2 million paid out in 2003/4 and who believes more effort needs to be made to keep these figures down.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey released these details upon a questioning by Easton.

Easton believes this information reflects "an increasingly litigious society" and that "In this regard we are gradually following the pattern of other countries where it is now difficult to encourage health professionals to work within particular specialism’s,"

"Those working in the health service and those with a responsibility for overseeing the running of it must ensure that everything is done to limit these sums in the years ahead."
