Farmer sues over falling rocket - 26/03/2008A Russian farmer is suing Ruissia’s space agency over a failed rocket launch which ended up with a 10-foot-long piece of scrap metal falling onto his property narrowly missing his outhouse.
The Roskosmos agency, Russia’s NASA, is being sued for 1 million roubles ($42,000) by Boris Urmatov who lives in a small rural town that lies under the rocket’s flight path.
Something woke him up in the night, like something exploded. Since he's visually handicapped he didn't notice the fallen rocket parts," Urmatov's sister Marina told Reuters over the phone from the village of Kyrlyk.
The farmer, if he were in the UK, could have contacted a solicitor for a no win no fee compensation claim against the government.
Residents in the nearby village of Ust-Kan say that falling rocket parts is just a common fact of life while living in that region.
Reuters reported one local as explaining: "Sometimes it's smooth metal casings, sometimes it's bolts. I remember something like an engine fell once," adding: “They fly. They fall.”
