Inquests service launched by firm - 20/11/2007A special service is being offered by a Wiltshire solicitors firm - in what might prove an indication of future medical negligence legal practice.
Withy King s, based in Trowbridge, has launched an inquest representation service, which it says will make the legal process much more bearable for those who face a family member's death being under investigation.
Currently, many families represent themselves at coroner's inquests rather than enlisting lawyers.
However, the Wiltshire Times reports that medical records collecting, liasing with the coroner's office, finding witnesses and general investigation work will all be undertaken by the firm for a fixed fee prior to inquests.
This could potentially make future medical negligence compensation claims much easier to process.
Lawyer Paul Rumley, talking to the newspaper, said: "While it is still common for families to represent themselves during inquest proceedings, increasing numbers are turning to lawyers for assistance, particularly if they feel there may be a separate clinical negligence claim arising from the circumstances of the death.
"This is usually an extremely difficult time for families and they often feel unable to cope with the inquest preparation or the hearing itself - we are also encouraged by the apparent assistance coroners say they get from our involvement in the process."
