Suffolk payout figures revealed - 23/10/2007Figures released by the NHSLA - which handles compensation claims for the NHS - have shown that over £1 million was paid out by Suffolk hospitals over the past year.
The medical negligence claims are split roughly evenly between the Ipswich Hospital and the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.
Spokesperson at Ipswich Jan Rowsell said: "I think because the hospital is part of the community and the community is part of the hospital there generally seems to be a rise in people seeking redress than in the past.
"We have very rigorous procedures in-hand to try and reduce all the possible risks. Inevitably we cannot eliminate every single risk as medicine is not risk-free."
Of the total paid out, around one-third was taken up by compensation itself, with the rest going on legal fees.
The NHSLA was established in 1995, and has released its results for claims nationwide over the course of the past week.
