Little Lydia wins compensation battle - 26/11/2007A brave young girl who had to have both her legs amputated after her GP failed to make a house call is to receive a six-figure compensation payout.
London's High Court heard how little Lydia Cross was just two when she fell ill with septicaemia on November 7th 2003 - just two days after her sister had been discharged after recovering from the same illness.
Over the next three days she suffered bouts of hallucinations and vomiting, causing parents Jodie and Anthony so much concern that they asked their GP to make a house call.
The doctor decided against doing so, however, instead opting to give medical advice over the phone - and by the time the full gravity of her situation was clear Lydia's fate had already been sealed, with gangrene rapidly spreading to her extremities.
In court today, Lydia's counsel Miss Alison McCormick told Mr Justice Blake that the GPs medical insurers had agreed to settle the youngster's case on the basis of 85 per cent liability.
Mum Jodie, 37, praised her daughter's resilience, saying: "She has done amazingly well. I don't really like her being called disabled as she can do more than many of her classmates - she even surfs and enjoys gymnastics."
