people warned away from website - 30/03/2008The public have been warned to view websites with a critical eye if they have been sponsored by Personal Injury Lawyers, according to U.S. research group Center for Medicine in the Public Interest (CMPI).
Claiming that the sites may seem like they offer worthy medical advice, CMPI explains that they are designed to "sell, deceive or frighten" health care consumers.
The research group found that many healthcare websites did not originate from a reputable health worker but rather they were made by lawyers “trolling” for client lists.
“As more and more patients rely on the Internet for health information, it's important to distinguish between bona fide health resources and cleverly-masked personal injury lawyer Web sites," said, family physician, Dr. Evelyn Tobias Merrill.
She further warns health care consumers: “Misleading or inaccurate information sponsored by some personal injury lawyers poses a serious health threat, especially if bad information shapes patients' healthcare decisions."
