"Shake-up" of coroner''s court welcomed - 02/04/2008

Changes to giving evidence in the coroner's court have been welcomed by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).

A government ruling means that those blamed for preventative deaths of individuals can be forced by the coroner to give evidence. Until now those at blame were only obligated to provide details and at this stage would not have to alter their actions to prevent deaths. Lawyers at APIL believe the move will help those making personal injury claims.

Martin Bare, president of APIL, said: "This will give the coroners system the shake-up it so badly needs. There is absolutely no point in coroners making recommendations if they are not going to be followed up."

Mr Bare believes that if guilty authorities are obligated to supply their evidence it will lead to a greater clarity of what steps they have taken to prevent further deaths. Traditionally most authorities respond to a coroner's request for information concerning preventable deaths.
