New law to impact health and safety - 09/04/2008Employees are thought to have extra protection from a new law that has come into effect this month, said insurance experts.
The Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act became applicable on April 6 and will act as a health and safety watchdog of companies.
Martin Bare, president of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), said: "We hope this will be a wake-up call for those companies who take a lax approach to the health and safety of their staff, and force them to take it much more seriously."
Mr Bare explains that if a company is found to be negligent through a "gross breach of duty" then employers could be fined an unlimited amount.
The new law has been welcomed by APIL who are optimistic workplace deaths will be avoided.
Mr Bare adds that the new law may have been even more effective if it applied to negligent individuals rather than companies.
"The Act would have been an even stronger deterrent to those who choose to ignore health and safety of their employees," he said.
