Sheffield roads to be improved - 26/11/2007

A major upgrade of roads in Sheffield has been announced by the government.

Around £6.3 million has been earmarked for the improvements to the Yorkshire city's streets - the funding increase driven in part by damage done by summer floods.

Road improvements will not only protect against further damage from extreme weather - but might lead to improved road safety due to better surfaces.

In turn, this would lead to a reduction in car crashes and accident claims.

Transport minister Rosie Winterton said: "This flood repair money should allow work to continue on the damaged roads."

She added: "I also want to assure local people that we are continuing to work with the council to identify further costs and we will seriously consider any further claims for funding."

The total bill for the summer floods which hit Britain this year has topped £2.5 billion, figures from the Association of British Insurers have shown.

Around £40 million is required to repair flood-damaged roads in the UK, What Car reports.
