New survey specifies "driver distractions" - 07/09/2007The threat of driver distraction from annoying passengers has been highlighted by a leading insurance firm.
Norwich Union say that eight per cent of those involved in accidents blame passenger distraction for the crash.
More than one-third also said that a distraction such as a screaming child or a nagging spouse had caused them to lose concentration while driving, although just one-in-ten said that they had shouted at passengers.
Norwich Union spokesman Nigel Bartram said: "Many drivers don't realise the impact passengers can have on their driving skills and concentration.
"Not only can these distractions be a cause of annoyance, they also have the potential to cause a road accident."
Drivers in the South West were found to be the worst tempered by the insurer, with those in the North West the most likely to be distracted.
Norwich Union asked 744 British drivers to list their annoyances for the survey.
