Early treatment for whiplash proves more effective - 06/04/2008

A study has shown that those who seek treatment for whiplash related injuries sooner will recover quicker than those who leave the injury.

Whiplash is the most common injury received in a car crash and can be suffered by passengers in a vehicle travelling as slow as 5 miles per hour. For a long time people with whiplash have thought that the injury is one which just needs time to heal, but new research has shown this is not necessarily the case.

According to the study, early treatment after the injury occurs helps prevent scar tissue forming at the site of the injury because the patient is kept mobile. Seeking treatment from a professional also helps the patient overcome the fear of moving their neck and shoulders and possibly making the injury more serious. In the long term, it has been shown that those who received professional healthcare in the first few weeks after the injury had a better recovery than those who either sought help later or decided to let the injury heal on its own.
