Officers suffer whiplash in training exercise - 07/04/2008
Three police officers were injured when taking part in a training exercise when their car collided with a van
The officers from Durham police were travelling on the hard shoulder of the A1 in a police driving school car, with blue lights and sirens activated, when a lorry moved on to the hard shoulder from the inside lane. The police car was forced on to the embankment and came to rest among some small trees and bushes, a police spokesman.
The incident happened just south of junction 62, by the Carville interchange, to the north east of Durham.
The officers suffered minor injuries, mainly whiplash, but none were detained in hospital.
A police spokesman said they had spoken to the lorry driver but were still appealing for witnesses to contact them.
A report released last year by the Independent Police Complaints Commission said that only half of police drivers involved in high-speed chases that ended in death or serious injury were fully trained in pursuit.
About 40 people die each year in road accidents involving police vehicles.
