Van driver suffers whiplash after pile up - 08/04/2008

A van driver was taken to hospital with suspected whiplash after being involved in a five-vehicle pile up this morning on the A31 near Ringwood.

In the morning rush hour three vans and two cars were involved in a crash that occurred on the outside Southampton-bound lane of the busy dual carriageway.

The accident caused major tailbacks as the two lanes of traffic were reduced to just one as drivers were directed away to avoid the wreckage resulting from the crash. The road was completely reopened again an hour after the accident.

Out of all those involved in the incident only one man was taken to hospital with suspected whiplash. The man, who was driving one of the vans caught up in the crash, was said to be in a considerable amount of pain. All the other drivers concerned were said to have not suffered any injuries.

Whiplash is a common injury in cases where a number of cars shunt into the back of each other after an incident. The symptoms of whiplash are usually minor but in some cases can involve long term suffering.
