Highways Agency to announce M25 contract victors - 10/04/2008The Highways Agency will make a decision this week as to which of three major consortiums should be awarded the contract for the expansion and upkeep of a section of the M25.
The winner will be assigned the task of widening 63 miles of the London orbital and maintaining the road for the next three decades. The contract will be worth around £5 billion to the successful bidder.
The motorway development, which is being run as a Private Finance Initiative, will result in the widening of three lane sections of the M25 to four lanes. The winning consortium will be expected to meet targets involving the clearing of road accidents, congestion and journey times.
Three consortiums are in the running for the contract. They are comprised of several major construction and business service firms including Laing O'Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Atkins. The latter two were both involved in the doomed Metronet consortium that was responsible for operating sections of the London tube network before going into administration in July 2007.
