Liverpool academy player critically ill after car accident - 11/04/2008A talented young footballer is critically ill in hospital after a car crash that claimed the lives of two of his friends.
Sean Highfield, who has represented England at under-16 level and is currently a member of Liverpool's youth academy, was one of five passengers in a Vauxhall Astra that was involved in a crash with a Volkswagen Beetle in Halewood, Liverpool.
Thomas Benn and Kalam Wooding, both 17, were killed in the accident which left three others seriously ill in hospital. The driver of the Beetle was treated for minor whiplash.
Mersey Police are investigating the cause of Sunday's crash but are not treating it as joyriding.
The manager of Liverpool youth academy, John Owens, made a statement of behalf of well-wishers at the academy.
“Obviously, are thoughts at this time are with Sean's family and friends because he is a very popular lad at the academy. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones in the crash,” he said.
