Miners claim wins MP's backing - 21/09/2007Six ex-miners suffering from what they claim are work-related diseases such as lung problems and vibration white finger have received support from their local MP.
Member for South Derbyshire Mark Todd - who also chairs the Coal Health Committee for the East Midlands - joined in on an advice session in the town of Moira this week.
The six miners are currently claiming back fees which they say were wrongly deducted from their compensation by solicitors on behalf of trade unions.
They say that the lawyers had not properly advised them that the deductions were not mandatory, the Burton Trader reports.
Mr Todd said: "The compensation scheme included generous payments for solicitors - any payment to a union should have been clearly understood to be voluntary.
"In most cases solicitors and unions stuck to these principles, but there were exceptions."
The report adds that the Legal Complaints Service (LCS) has received over 2,660 complaints about such deductions made by solicitors.
Also at the advice meeting were members of the pressure group Moira Miners Welfare and an LCS representative.
