Worker injury sends contractor to court - 10/09/2007

A road-side accident which left a worker needing reconstructive surgery on his face has led to a £5,000 fine for his employer.

Central Linemarkings were found to be culpable for the accident by the City of London Magistrates court, after Graham Yule was hit by a taxi cab while painting lines on a West London bus lane.

Mr Yule has also lost the use of one of his arms due to the accident, severely impacting on his current and future work prospects.

Costs of £10,000 were also ordered to be paid by the firm, following the lodging of a guilty plea, Workplace Law reports.

It was found that no cones or signs were laid out by the workers to warn traffic of the road works, due to Central Linemarkings deeming the job "too short in duration" to justify the safety measures.

Health and safety inspector Lisa Chappel said that the "unfortunate accident" showed "how important it is for contractors to provide appropriate instructions, training and supervision to safeguard their workers regardless of the duration of the work".
