Swansea authorities criticised for private eye order - 31/08/2007A Welsh council has been found guilty of a "cruel" attack on a sick employee by a tribunal.
Swansea Council was found to have hired private detectives to check up on legal executive Malcolm Honey after he was forced off work due to bronchitis last July, Workplace Law reports.
The council videotaped the sick man, and ordered him to report back to them on his return. Accusations of fraudulent sick pay claims followed, and he was eventually sacked in December 2006.
Mr Honey, who subsequently took the council to the tribunal, said: "I m very pleased and relieved that the Tribunal has seen through the council's ridiculous claims and I just want my name to now be cleared.
"It's been a very difficult year for me and for my family and we now just want to get on with our lives again."
Samantha Moore at Thompsons Solicitors, who represented Mr Honey, added: "Malcolm Honey did not deserve to be treated in the way that Swansea Council treated him.
"We’re therefore very pleased with the outcome of this case and hope that Honey can begin to rebuild his career and his reputation."
Mr Honey was also supported by trade union UNISON for the court case.
Leaving the door open for an appeal, Swansea Council commented that they were "surprised" by the tribunal's decision.
