ILO blames employers and government for increased danger in the workplace - 30/03/2008The workplace is even more dangerous that it was 10 years ago, meaning more money and lives per year are being lost due to accidents at work, over 1.3million fatalities per year say the International LaborOrganization (ILO). That’s over 3,300 work-related deaths a day.
"Globalization, increasing the competition between companies, has too many negative effects on work safety," Mr. Velasco ILO's workers activities director said.
The ILO condemns employers and governments for letting health and safety in the workplace slide.
Accidents are often caused by "non-existent prevention, dangerous production practices, sometimes the inattention of governments to the problem, and impunity for employers guilty of negligence", Mr. Velasco said.
Asbestos is a big killer, taking 100,000 lives every year and unless something is done, more than a million deaths by 2030. More than 900,000 workers die each year due to toxic substances that are used in the workplace.
Around 170,000 agricultural workers die each year. As well as this the ILO have informed that millions are injured, or poisoned by pesticides per year and believe more needs to be done to lower these numbers.
