A woman died in her home in Rotherham on Thursday from carbon monoxide poisoning, caused by a leaking gas appliance.
Leaking gas appliances can be a death trap and it is the landlord’s responsibility to make sure that they are properly maintained.
The responsibilities of the landlord came to the publics’ attention recently when a landlord in Trechory was prosecuted for not having maintained the gas properly. The court found him guilty of breaching the Gas Safety Regulation of 1998 and he had to pay a fine of £6,000 and total costs of £4,478. The case did not fall under the work health and safety regulation since the accident took place in a residential apartment.
The landlord had fitted the boiler himself in the flat he owned in Tonypandy, but the tenant noticed there was a gas leak and reported it to National grid, which could help to make it safe.
